Flexible travel insurance: SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance

I’ve been traveling for over 10 years, and I’ve never been outside my home country without a travel insurance. I believe that this is a very small investment when compared to the peace of mind it gives you. We never know when we’ll fall sick, get injured or go through travel-related issues such as lost checked luggage, and I can tell you from experience that having a good insurance makes all the difference.

However, I’ve always struggled with the fact that most travel insurance plans I know don’t cover travels on a one-way ticket and don’t let you sign up if you’re already on the road. When you go traveling with the whole itinerary pre-planned, this isn’t an issue. But if you’re a remote worker like me, you probably travel without a return ticket at least once in a while. That’s where the need for flexible travel insurance comes in.

In 2019, I found out about SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance, which was the answer to that. This travel insurance was created to offer flexibility and freedom for nomads and long-term travelers. It’s designed to adapt to this lifestyle, whether you’re hopping from one country to another or setting up temporary bases around the globe.

And even if you’re not a digital nomad or frequent traveler, but simply decided to plan a spontaneous trip without a return date, this is a great solution too.

With SafetyWing, you can travel all around the world with the same insurance policy, without the need to specify your destination – the only extra cost is when you travel to the U.S. You can pay monthly, travel indefinitely, and easily cancel your policy anytime.

What is SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance?

SafetyWing is a Norwegian company founded by and for digital nomads, providing insurance solutions that cater specifically to the needs of remote workers and long-term travelers. Their flagship product, Nomad Insurance, is accepted in most countries in the world.

With Nomad Insurance you can embark on your travels without the constraints imposed by traditional insurance policies. SafetyWing has designed this product to remove barriers and support a lifestyle of exploration and adventure.

Key features of SafetyWing’s flexible travel insurance

1. Monthly payment

Unlike traditional travel insurance plans that require a fixed-term commitment, Nomad Insurance allows you to pay on a monthly basis. This pay-as-you-go option means you can travel indefinitely without the hassle of renewing your policy every few months.

Each billing period lasts 4 weeks, and you can choose to get it renewed automatically, so you don’t have to worry about running out of coverage while you’re on the road.

You can stop your auto-extension whenever you want by logging into your account and clicking the “Stop insurance” button on your profile. Then your coverage will be cancelled at the end of your current period.

2. No need to specify your next destination

As I mentioned, with Nomad Insurance, you don’t need to know your next move. You’re free to wander wherever your heart desires without needing to tell the company where you’ll be traveling to, and you dont even need to have a return ticket.

This flexibility is a game-changer for digital nomads and remote workers who don’t usually plan their journeys upfront. You can even sign up for the insurance while you’re already abroad, at any point during your journey.

3. Comprehensive global coverage

You are covered for travel anywhere in the world outside of your home country, with the exception of any country or area that is sanctioned.

SafetyWing complies with US, UK, EU and UN sanctions, which means that as of June 2024 your destinations cannot be Belarus, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Syria, and Ukraine.

By paying the same monthly fee, which is determined according to your age range, you get coverage anywhere but your home country and the destinations mentioned above. The only extra cost comes when you travel to the U.S.

What’s included in this flexible travel insurance?

SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance medical coverage assists you if you are in an accident or fall sick while outside your home country. In case you get sick or injured while abroad, you can visit any doctor or hospital for medical treatment, including hospital stays, nursing care, ambulance for hospitalization, diagnostics like MRIs, extended care after hospital, prescriptions, emergency dental (up to $1000) and more, with the maximum coverage limit of US$250,000.

If something happens during your trip, you can go to any licensed hospital, clinic, or doctor of your choice, private or public. You pay the medical bills yourself and claim compensation later.

Besides medical issues, the Nomad Insurance also covers you in case of unforeseen events related to the trip itself. Some examples are evacuation from local unrest, lost checked luggage, flights homme if something bad happens (such as a death in the family), meals and accommodations if you have a travel delay of over 12 hours.

They also offer optional add-ons like adventure sports coverage, so you get assistance if you get injured while practicing over 30 adventure sports, and electronics coverage, so you’re reimbursed if your laptop, phone, camera, or other electronics get stolen.

You can file a claim from your mobile or web browser in a few simple steps. In case you need help, you can reach out to their customer service, which is available 24/7 (and there are actual humans you can talk to).

As you’ve seen, this flexible travel insurance is a great choice for those who don’t give up their freedom but also recognize the importance of health and travel assistance.
