Where to stay in Paraty: best areas and accommodation tips
Accommodation in Paraty in the Historic Center
The historic center is the most beautiful part of town and definitely the best area to stay in Paraty. Staying just a few minutes from several delicious bars and restaurants is an undeniable advantage. No wonder accommodations in this area are usually more expensive, but it’s worth it.
Among the many charming inns in Paraty, the most famous is the Pousada Literária, inspired by the most famous of the towns many festivals, FLIP (International Literary Festival of Paraty). The place is sophisticated and has a large pool, SPA and the renowned Quintal das Letras restaurant, which is also open to the general public.
If you are looking for something with a first class structure, but a little more affordable, you’ll like Casa Simone Pousada and Arte Urquijo. It is also worth checking out Sandi Hotel, Pousada do Ouro and Pousada da Marquesa.
Is your budget tighter? No problem! If you want to stay in the historic centre of Paraty for cheap, but with comfort, check out Pousada Bartholomeu, Casas do Pátio, Pousada do Cais, Pousada Aconchego and Pousada Arte Colonial.
Pay attention to the fact that some of these pousadas are right on Praça Matriz, the main square in town. That is both good and bad: good because you are in the heart of the city, in the middle of the hustle and bustle. And bad because hustle means a little more noise and a little less tranquility. So if you’re looking for a quiet retreat, being too close to the square might not be the best choice.
Where to stay in Paraty close to the Historic Center
If you don’t mind walking a bit, you can also consider other inns that are located just beyond the limits of the historic center, such as Pousada Corsário. This well-rated accommodation is on the edge of the river that divides the historic center from the area that gives access to Praia do Pontal, the main beach in town.
Pousada do Príncipe is an option with good reputation in the commercial center of Paraty, but just a few minutes from the historic part.
For those looking for a hostel close by, a good option is Che Lagarto. It’s part of an international chain that tends to have a good standard and offers private rooms or beds in mixed or female dorms.
Accommodation in Paraty at Praia do Pontal
Praia do Pontal is the closest beach to the Historic Center of Paraty. It’s definitely not the most beautiful beach in the area, but staying in this region means being close to some “foot in the sand” bars and a short walk away from the center.
The only accommodation I know of by the sea on this stretch of beach is the Chill Inn Hostel e Pousada. A little further inland, but still close to the sea and the historic center, you will find Pousada Pontal Gardens and Pousada da Praia.
Where to stay in Paraty at Praia do Jabaquara
Most of my time in Paraty was spent by the sea, at Praia do Jabaquara, a little further away. There I had the privilege to witness a handful of incredible sunrises. For two weeks, I did a work exchange at the Hotel Brunello, a simple but very good inn, with a sensational staff and excelent breakfast.
Jabaquara is not the most common choice for those looking for a place to stay in Paraty. But it is a quiet area, and there you’ll find some good bars and restaurants in the sand with a delicious atmosphere (perfect for romantic dinners).
If you stay there and don’t have a car, be prepared to walk about 20 minutes to the center (part of the way is steep) or wait for a bus that passes every half hour or so.
Other options in this region are Recanto do Jabaquara, with a simpler structure, and Eliconial, more sophisticated, but a little further from the center.
