Best places to stay in Alter do Chão, Brazil: a complete guide
Looking for the best places to stay in Alter do Chão, Pará? I spent 10 days in this delightful destination in the Brazilian Amazon and I’m already thinking about going back. The good news is that the village of Alter do Chão, which is a district of the municipality of Santarém, has plenty of accommodation options. And since it’s small, it’s not hard to find a well-located inn, hotel or hostel.
My main recommendation for where to stay in Alter do Chão is to pick accommodation near the waterfront and the center of the village. Use the Praça Central (Central Square) as a reference point. It is surrounded by shops and restaurants and boat tours depart from there or from the Tourist Assistance Center (CAT), which is about a 5-minute walk away. So, if you stay in this area, you’ll have the convenience of doing everything on foot.
However, this area is urbanized and resembles many other small towns in Brazil’s countryside. If you’re looking for a more immersive experience in the forest, consider staying in more remote accommodation, many of which are integrated with nature.
It’s worth noting that Alter do Chão doesn’t have luxury hotels, and most accommodation is simple, with basic services. However, there are some charming inns with more attention to detail, especially farther from the village center. One highlight in most places is hospitality: the staff there tend to be very attentive and welcoming.
For those seeking more local experiences, it’s also possible to take overnight tours in the forest, stay on isolated beaches, or lodge in some riverside communities.
Are you wondering how much does it cost to stay in Alter do Chão? Accommodation prices can vary widely depending on the time of year. In the low season (February to June), rates are more affordable. This is the period of the Amazonian winter, when it rains much more.
In the Amazonian summer (August to December), when the famous river beaches form, prices go up. That’s also true during school vacations, which in Brazil are both in January and July. During this time, especially on holidays or during the Sairé festival (the main cultural event in Alter do Chão, which happens in September), it’s advisable to book accommodation in advance.

Where to stay in Alter do Chão with forest vibes
If you want to experience nature with plenty of comfort, a great option for where to stay in Alter do Chão is the beautiful Casa da Árvore. Some friends stayed there and highly recommended it, especially for those traveling in groups. The accommodation is well-equipped and, though rustic, it’s charming and very comfortable. Be aware that the same link leads to two different accommodations: Casa da Árvore itself and Chalé Amazônia; you’ll need to choose between the two of them when booking.
I’ve also heard great things about Villa Arumã Pousada, which has beautifully decorated chalets, some with jacuzzis. The breakfast is wonderful, with bread and cakes made on-site, and they offer bicycles for guests to use. Their average rating at Booking.com is 9.7/10. The inn is about a 20-minute walk from the center or less than a 10-minute taxi ride.
Another inn in Alter do Chão with an excellent reputation and an immersive forest atmosphere is Vila AMZ, which has an average rating of 9.6/10. The breakfast is very good, the service is excellent, and the location is good, as it’s in the middle of the forest but about 15 minutes from the center and less than 5 minutes from Lago Verde. They offer both shared and private rooms, and the breakfast and service receive high praise.
Another rustic lodging option is Casa Curuá, where the rooms are well integrated with the forest. It seems to be a lovely place.
Finally, another great tip for where to stay in Alter do Chão is Pousada Amazônia. A friend stayed there a few months ago and loved it. I didn’t get to see the rooms, but I used the common area, which is open to non-guests, and thought it was great. There’s a pool with a bar, a small stream (igarapé) within the property, and a beach tennis court. The staff is very attentive, and the food at the restaurant is excellent. You’ll need to take a dirt road to get to the village, but they offer free transportation for guests.
